Location: Western Province, Rwanda
Implementation Period: January 2023 - December 2025
Project Type: Forest Restoration & Ecosystem Recovery
Gishwati-Mukura is one of Rwanda's important ecological landscapes. Over the years, pressure from land use changes, population growth and environmental degradation affected parts of the ecosystem. This project was designed to support landscape restoration by increasing tree cover, improving land management practices and strengthening community participation in conservation activities.
The main objectives were:
The project contributed to improved vegetation recovery, stronger community awareness and increased participation in environmental protection. Restored areas benefited from improved soil protection, reduced erosion risks and better ecosystem conditions.
Community involvement and environmental education ensure that restoration activities continue beyond the project implementation period.
Location: Kigali City, Rwanda
Implementation Period: February 2023 - November 2024
Project Type: Urban Greening & Community Conservation
Urban growth creates pressure on green spaces. This project focused on increasing environmental awareness and improving urban landscapes through community-based tree planting activities.
The initiative increased community participation in environmental protection and helped create awareness about the importance of trees in urban areas. Participants gained practical knowledge about tree care and environmental responsibility.
Schools and community groups continue supporting tree maintenance and promoting environmental awareness among new participants.
Location: Multiple Districts Across Rwanda
Implementation Period: 2023 - 2026
Project Type: Climate Awareness & Nature-Based Solutions
Climate change affects agriculture, ecosystems and community livelihoods. This initiative was created to support climate awareness and encourage practical environmental solutions.
The project strengthened understanding of climate challenges and encouraged communities to participate in solutions that protect natural resources.
By building local knowledge and leadership, communities continue applying environmentally responsible practices after project activities.
Location: Northern Province, Rwanda
Implementation Period: February 2024 - October 2025
Project Type: Sustainable Agriculture & Agroforestry
Many farming communities depend on agriculture for their livelihoods. However, soil degradation, climate pressure and changing weather patterns affect farm productivity. This project introduced agroforestry approaches that combine trees with crops to improve soil health, protect farmland and create additional benefits for farmers.
Farmers gained knowledge about integrating trees into agricultural systems, leading to improved soil protection, increased environmental awareness and more sustainable farming practices.
Farmers continue maintaining trees within their farms, creating long-term environmental and agricultural benefits.
Location: Eastern Province, Rwanda
Implementation Period: April 2023 - December 2024
Project Type: Land Restoration & Soil Conservation
Some areas of Eastern Rwanda experience challenges related to soil erosion, land degradation and reduced agricultural productivity. This project focused on restoring affected landscapes through conservation practices and sustainable land management.
The project contributed to improved land conditions, increased vegetation cover, better soil protection and stronger community participation in conservation.
The approach provides a foundation for expanding restoration activities and supporting more communities facing environmental challenges.
Through restoration, tree planting, climate action and community engagement, The Hero Roots works to create measurable environmental change across Rwanda.
